BARDS OF THE WASATCH

This is a page that celebrates the musical  creativity of members of the Utah Pagan Community. Instrumentalists include players on the mountain and hammered dulcimer, harpers, tinwhistle and flute players, guitarists and those who play bowed psaltery and autoharp, as well as singers and several wonderful belly dancers. This is to say nothing of our amazing drummers, led by Windwood. Come join us at  SunStave Sabbat rites, Pagan Pipes Song Circles,  and Community Drum Circles to enjoy and learn this music.

Below you will find lyrics to chants and songs we use often. Some here are very old chants  commonly found in the international Pagan community. Others are local adaptations of old chants, and filks of songs. Then there are many wonderful songs and chants that have been composed locally ( all have been correctly attributed unless the author wishes to remain anonymous.) All chants are to be used and shared freely as you desire.

Please Note: We have a community song circle which meets monthly, where these and other songs and chants are practiced and shared. Pagan Pipes is sponsored by the CUUPs Chapter at South Valley Unitarian Universalist Society. Please look at the  CUUPS web site here   to discover the location and time of Pagan Pipes and other CUUPs sponsored events.. More information on public Pagan activities in the Salt Lake community is here.

  RHEA OF THE DRUM

Rhea of the drum, mother of the drum
Daughter of the earth and sky
Beats upon her drum, beats upon her drum
When she hears her children Cry.
Aiy, aiy aiy aiy
Woe woe woe woe
Sometimes I’m afraid of the dark out there
Aiy, aiy aiy aiy
Woe woe woe woe
Sometimes I’m afraid of the dark in here.

THE RIVER IS FLOWING

The river is flowing, flowing and growing.
The river is flowing, down to the sea.
Oh Mother carry me, your child I will always be.
Oh Mother carry me down to the sea.

SUNWISE SONG

I was born on the longest night
And the winter winds knew my name.
The stars, they gleamed
and the moon shined bright;
They were taking me home again…
*
Then I stood up in the dawning light
And I put myself to shame.
For there I learned that the gathering light
Was taking me home again…
*
My horns grew forth
like the buds of Spring
And I pranced through forest and fen,
Making signs of love in old stone rings
That were taking me home again…
*
Then I set out with a stout yew bow
On a quest for mystic game.
What no woman may tell
nor man may know
Was taking me home again…
*
My flame burned soft as the Autumn sun
And my vital, gold light waned.
My runes were cast
and my spells were spun
I was coming home again…
*
I heard Her voice and She enchanted me
‘Til I could no more remain.
My fire grew dim and Blessed Be,
For now I was home again…

CLOSING HYMN (THE GOAT SONG)

On a hill far away
stands a stone menhir ring
The emblem of druidic pride
And we love that stone ring
and the circle within
Like the goddess as hag, mom and bride.

So we’ll dance round the stone menhir ring
‘Til  the flames of the fire have died down
We’ll emote, slit a goat’s throat, and sing
Then get dressed and drive back into town

On a hill nearby stands
a looped ansate cross
Of the sort some folks call an ankh,
Keeping evil at bay
like the shield of the law
For which we have Gardner to thank.
**Chorus

In the valley below
shine the flashing blue lights
On the car of the local police.
But the law’s on our side,
and we soon will be free
Well, at least by next Midsummer’s Eve.
**Chorus.

OAK AND ASH AND THORN
Lyrics by: Rudyard Kipling

Of all the trees that grow so fair,
Olde England to adorn,
Greater are none beneath the sun
Than Oak and Ash and Thorn
Refrain: Sing Oak and Ash and Thorn
All on a midsummer's morn
Surely we sing of no little thing
In Oak and Ash and Thorn.

The Oak of the clay lived many a day
e'er ever Aeneas began;
The Ash of the loam was a lady at home
when Brooke was a  outlaw man;
The Thorn of the down
saw New Troy town
from whence was London born;
Witness hereby the ancient trey
of Oak and Ash and Thorn.

The Yew that is old with churchyard mold
yieldeth a mighty bow;
Alder for shoes doth wise men choose
and Beech for cups also.
But when you have killed
and your cupr it is filled
and your shoes are plain outworn,
Back you must speed for all that you need
to Oak & Ash & Thorn.

The Elm she hates mankind and waits
for every gust to be laid
To drop a limb on the head of him
who any way trusts her shade.
But whether a lad be sober or sad
or mellow with ale from the horn,
He chooseth no wrong who lieth along
'neath Oak and Ash and Thorn.

O do not tell the priest of our plight,
for he would call it a sin;
For we have been out
in the woods all night
a 'conjuring summer in.
We bring good news by word of mouth,
good news for cattle and corn;
For  now is the sun
come up from the south
with Oak and Ash and Thorn.

Hail, Crone, Blossom and Bone!

Hail, Crone, Blossom and Bone!
We dance on Her shoulders

For the land, all for the land

The Earth is the Goddess,

Hail, Crone, Blossom and Bone!
We rest on Her shoulders
and sleep in Her hand
In the land, deep in the land.

CIRCLE SONG

Dance for the wind,
and the blue skies shall smile on thee,
Dance for the Sun,
and his warmth shall surround thee.
Dance for the rain,
as it falls, splashing merrily.
Dance for the earth,
and her blessings will hold thee.

Sing for the goat-foot god,
Call down the Lady.
Raise up a cone of power,
Spinning round a ring.

Speak of your heart’s desire,
Whisper your fantasy.
Enchantment rules the night,
When Her children sing.

LONG WALK TO AVALON

It’s a long, long walk to Avalon
Down a road that few have seen.
It’s a long, long time since the bard has sung
And the earth was wild and free.

Tell me where can the unicorn lay his head?
Tell me where have the woodsprites all gone?
Tell me where have the Sidhe,
the proud Dannan now fled,
Taking with them the balefire’s glad song?

Tell me, how many times
Can the sun set down
With no legends to tell where he goes?
Tell me, how many times
Must the moon shine around
On desolation, where forests would grow?

Comes a dying god on a bloody cross
And a horned lord of evil to fear –
Pushing men to arms, with their sanity lost
To draw blood in holy war.

First the winter’s snows lay nature to bed
In the icy death of the yea
Then the springtime sun shines upon my head
And I know I have nothing to fear.

It’s a long, long walk to Avalon
Down a road that we can see.
It is not so far, nor is it gone.
Avalon’s in you and me.

WE ALL COME FROM THE GODDESS

We all come from the Goddess
And to her we shall return
Like a drop of rain
Flowing to the ocean.

We all come from the Horned One
And to him we shall return
Like a flash of flame
Ascending to the heavens

LISTEN LADY LISTEN

Listen Lady Listen to my heart's song
Listen Lady Listen to my heart's song,

HERETIC HEART
Lyrics by: Catherine Madsen

I am a bold and a Pagan soul
a-rattlin' through this land.
I judge the world by my own lights
and I come by my own hand;
And if you ask me where
I learned to live so recklessly,
My skin, my bones, my heretic heart
are my authority.

My mother was a spinner of tales,
my father a dreaming man.
And I have swung on the Dragon's Tongue
and danced on holy land.
I have sung the seed up out of the ground
and the bird down from the tree;
My skin, my bones, my heretic heart
are my authority.

Once I was bound but now I'm gone away
from the faithful fold'
From those who preach that holiness
is to do as you are told.
Though law and scripture,
priest and prayer have all instructed me,
My skin, my bones, my heretic heart
are my authority.

They tell me Jesus loves me,
but I think he loves in vain;
He must go unrequited,
on me he has no claim.
My healer is the Lady Moon
whose tides run deep in me.
My skin, my bones, my heretic heart
are my authority.

And while I breathe this glorious air,
an outlaw  I'll remain;
My body will not be subdued
and I will not be saved.
And if I cannot shout aloud,
I'll sing it secretly,
My skin, my bones, my heretic heart
are my authority.

LORD OF THE DANCE
by Gwyddion Pendderwyn, Amy Falkowitz, Ann Case, Len Rosenberg

She danced on the water,
and the wind was her horn
The Lady laughed, and everything was born
And when She lit the sun
and its  light gave Him birth
The Lord of the Dance
first appeared on the Earth

chorus: Dance, dance, wherever you may be
I am the Lord of the Dance, you see!
I live in you, and you live in Me
And I lead you all in the Dance, said He!

 I danced in the morning
when the world was new-begun
I danced in the Moon
and the Stars and the Sun
I was called from the darkness
by the Song of Earth
I joined in the Song, and She gave Me Birth!
chorus
I dance in the Circle
when the flames leap high
I dance in the Fire and I never, never die
I dance in the waves of the bright summer sea
For I am the Lord of the wave's mystery
chorus
I sleep in the kernel and I dance in the rain
I dance in the wind,
and through the waving grain
When they cut me down
I care nothing for the pain
In the spring I'm the Lord
of the Dance once again!
chorus
I dance at the Sabbat
when you dance out the spell
I dance and sing that everyone be well
And when the dancing's over do not think that I am gone
To live is to Dance! So I still Dance on.
chorus
I see the Maidens laughing
as they dance in the Sun
And I count the fruits
of the harvest one by one
I know the Storm is coming,
but the Grain is all stored
So I sing of the Dance of the Lady,
and Her Lord:
chorus
The Horn of the Lady cast
its sound cross the plain
The birds took the notes,
and gave them back again
Till the sound of Her music
was a Song in the sky
And to that Song there is only one reply:
chorus
We dance ever slower
as the leaves fall and spin
And the sound of the Horn
is the wailing of the wind
The Earth is wrapped in Stillness,
and we move in a trance,
But we hold on fast to our faith in the Dance!
chorus
The sun is in the southland
and the days grow chill
And the sound of the horn is fading on the hill
'Tis the horn of the Hunter,
as he rides across the plain
And the Lady sleeps
'til the Spring comes again
chorus
The Sun is in the southland
and the days lengthen fast
And soon we will sing
for the Winter that is past
Now we light the candles
and rejoice as they burn
And we dance the Dance of the Sun's return!
chorus
They danced in the darkness
and they danced in the night
They danced on the Earth,
and everything was light
They danced out the Darkness
and they danced in the Dawn
And the Day of that Dancing is still going on!
chorus
 I gaze on the Heavens
and I gaze on the Earth
And I feel the pain of dying and rebirth
And I lift my head in gladness and in praise
For the Dance of the Lord and His Lady gay
chorus
I dance in the stars
as they whirl throughout space
And I dance in the pulse
of the veins in your face
No dance is too great, no dance is too small,
You can look anywhere, for I dance in them all! chorus

The moon in her phases,
and the tides of the sea
The motion of the Earth,
and the Seasons that will be
Are the rhythm for the dancing,
and a  promise through the years
That the Dance goes on
through our joys and tears

 chorus:
So dance, dance, wherever you may be
I am the Lord of the Dance, you see!
I live in you, and you live in Me
And I lead you all in the Dance, said He!

BE LIKE A BIRD

Who halting in her flight
On a limb too slight,
Feels it give way beneath her
Yet sings, sings
Knowing she has wings.
Yet sings, sings
Knowing she has wings.

DARK EARTH

Dark earth, silent stone, tangled root and green leaf, oh,
High peak, magic herb, cold spring rush and   forest grow,
Mountain Mother, come to me
I receive You merrily,
Guide my footsteps, feed my soul,
Wherever I may go!
